The Last Straw

Jon says once you start filling your truck up with straw you’re a farmer.

I know from observing our neighbors, whose families have been farming for generations, that a few gardens do not a farm make.

This particular garden, which is on the South side of our garage, was a problem area for a long time. It was home to some kind of weed I have yet to identify. After trying every method I could think of to banish them, I was inspired by  this video to try deep straw mulch. Three years later, our blueberries, garlic, and strawberries are well established and weeds are at a minimum.

The past week or so we’ve harvested about two colanders of strawberries a day. That’s not farming, but it sure beats grocery shopping.
